Itinerary Ideas for Turkey Day, Black Friday, and the Long Holiday Weekend

The holiday season is the perfect excuse to get together with family, indulge in delicious food, give thanks for the little things that mean the most, and make even more memories on California's Central Coast. Whether you plan to shop the Black Friday sales til you drop, prefer to get the Christmas tree up as soon as the Thanksgiving dishes are done, or simply want to master the art of doing nothing, these tips will help you make the most of the long weekend.

Thursday: Leave the Cooking to the Professionals

Take advantage of local restaurants offering Thanksgiving dinner specials, like The Steakhouse at the Paso Robles Inn. You'll still enjoy all the traditional dishes like turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, and of course, pumpkin pie while avoiding the crowded grocery stores, too many cooks in the kitchen, and the mess that follows the feast. Make your reservations in advance—you'll be grateful you decided to dine out.

Sunrise Hike

Skip the door-buster sales and enjoy the greatest early-bird special of them all: the sunrise! All that turkey on Thursday will make you sleepy anyway, so get to bed early and rest up before a morning hike to balance out the feasting. If you're staying at one of our beautiful beach hotels, the nearby trails at the Pismo Preserve or Avila Ridge offer views that are totally worth the wake-up call. Afterward, those hard-earned leftovers will taste even more rewarding.

Turkey-Day Leftovers Picnic

There are tons of special spots all along the Central Coast that are perfect for an autumnal picnic. This Black Friday, do more than just heat-up leftovers from the big meal in between shopping trips. Instead, make some sandwiches with that delicious hand-carved turkey and pack a picnic. Bring along a bottle of sparkling apple cider, and of course a couple slices of pumpkin pie for round two of the feast. If you're looking for the perfect spot to place your picnic blanket, check out Dinosaur Caves Park, Montana de Oro, Pirate's Cove, or the Downtown City Park in Paso Robles. Use our guide to plan the perfect picnic.
