What to Expect at Your First Wine Club Pick-Up Party
Whether you’re visiting Paso Robles for the first time, just moved to town, or newly 21—there’s a lot to learn when you begin to dip your toes into the world of wine country. From tannins and terroir to appellation and aromas, there are many wine terms that you might not understand as a beginning wine drinker. “Pickup party” is another phrase you’ll hear a lot during your time in Paso Robles…but what exactly does that entail? We’ve broken down exactly what a pickup party is and what you can expect when you attend one of the many that happen in beautiful Paso Robles wine country.
Making the Guest List: Wine Club Membership
Before attending a pickup party, you have to be a wine club member. Wine clubs are a way for wineries to provide their customers with a series of wine bottles on a monthly or quarterly basis that they would’ve had to find and purchase on their own otherwise. If you’ve discovered a Paso Robles winery that you can’t get enough of, consider joining their wine club. That way, you’ll get to try all the wines they release throughout the year without missing a beat. Wine club memberships also often include special discounts, complimentary wine tastings, private dinners, and invitations to other special events. With over 200 wineries in Paso Robles, it can be hard to choose which wine club to join, but we recommend joining one that fits your budget, taste, and experience you’re seeking. Halter Ranch, Harmony Cellars, Sculpterra, Justin Winery, and August Ridge are all great places to start, as recommended by the Paso Robles Wineries tasting guide.
Picking Up: The Party
Once you’re part of the wine club, you’ll get to attend many fun events, including the pickup parties! After all, that’s how you get the wine you signed up for! While every winery has a different way of executing their pickup parties, there are a few common practices you can expect to encounter when you attend: food, friendship, music, and of course—wine! Whether the winery hosts their parties monthly or seasonally, pickup parties are an opportunity to taste the wines in your shipment, meet the winemakers and fellow wine club members, avoid shipping costs, and enjoy Paso Robles wine country!
