National Burger Day Recipes for Summer BBQs!

Summer barbecues are the perfect way to enjoy warm nights and great company. Although summer seems like it may be coming to an end, the weather is still great here on the Central Coast.  This leaves plenty of time for you to get outside with your loved ones to enjoy great food and great company. Your barbecue menu can be repetitive though, and there are some many ways to spice up your burgers with more than just cheese, lettuce, and tomato! To celebrate National Burger Day today, gather some of these more unique ingredients to create the best burgers ever!

Big Kahuna Hawaiian Burger

Instead of a plain old cheeseburger, enjoy the taste of coastal ingredients for a burger transportation to the Hawaiian Islands. This delicious recipe blends Asian and Hawaiian flavors, with an amazing pineapple teriyaki glaze and even topped with ham.

Ingredients (for 2 servings):


Preheat grill to medium/high. Mix pineapple juice and teriyaki sauce together to set aside.

Mix ground beef, ginger, garlic, salt, and soy sauce, ensuring not to overwork the protein. Divide into two patties and make an indentation in the center with your thumb, so the patty does not create a dome in the center. Grill patties until golden brown and baste with pineapple teriyaki sauce as it cooks. Also grill pineapple slices and toast sesame seed buns on barbecue.

Assemble burger by spreading mayo on bun and placing patty, lettuce, Swiss cheese, grilled pineapple, red onion, and ham on burger. Serve and enjoy!

Spicy Buffalo Chicken Burger

A barbecue favorite has always been Buffalo wings, with a delicious blue cheese or ranch dressing dipping sauce. Combine two barbecue classics with this recipe, great for those looking for a spicy twist on their meal. This burger will be the perfect pair with a cold beer and some crunchy carrots or celery.

Ingredients (2-4 servings):


Preheat grill to medium/high heat. Over medium heat, combine butter and honey with a whisk. Once the mixture has began boiling, reduce to a simmer to thicken sauce.

Form chicken sausage into patties and make an indentation with your thumb in the center to ensure your burger cooks evenly. Grill until golden brown and then brush hot sauce onto patty. Remove burger from heat and brush other side of patty.

Assemble burger with 2 rings of red onion, chicken sausage patty, blue cheese, and honey sauce on top of pretzel bun and enjoy!

Jalapeno Popper Burger

Another popular appetizer, jalapeno poppers, can be take on with a new twist to rejuvenate that boring burger. Juicy and delicious, this burger is sure to please everyone at your next barbecue.

Ingredients (6 servings):


Mix together ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to completely combine ingredients. Shape the mixture into twelve very thin patties and set aside. Mix together cream cheese, ancho chili powder, cumin, dried onion, and minced jalapeno to create a smooth blend.

Set out 6 of the thin patties and top with the cream cheese mixture, spreading with about ½ inch left on the edge. Take the remaining six patties and place each on top of the cream cheese mixture, making sure to seal the edges. Grill the patties about 10-15 minutes, or until done.

Brush burger buns with butter to toast on grill and top with mayo, burger patties, lettuce, tomato, and sliced red onion. Enjoy!

 Portobello Burger with Sun-Dried Tomato

Vegetarian burger options don’t have to be bland or boring. Often times veggie patties just don’t taste like the real thing, so try these Portobello patties instead! Packed with flavor and tons of nutrients, these vegetarian burgers are sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients (2 servings):


Remove mushroom stems and clean. Place on heated grill with bottom-side down, grill for about 10 minutes on each side until tender. Immediately top with cheese on the bottom side and let grill until melted. Take sun-dried tomatoes and place on the bottom-side of the mushroom, like a bowl.

Toast hamburger buns on grill and remove when finished. Place a mushroom on each bun and top with basil, then enjoy!

Devilish Southwestern Burger

Spicy, tangy, crunchy… This burger is far from boring. The mix of buffalo meat and taco seasoning adds an entirely new flavor to your burger expectations. Top with some guacamole and jalapeno jack cheese, then you’ve got yourself one tasty barbecue burger.

Ingredients (3 servings):


Completely mix together buffalo meat, taco seasoning, and salsa, then shape into three patties. Grill burgers on medium heat on foil for about 6-8 minutes for each side. Top with cheese and grill another 2 minutes to melt.

Mix together the sour cream and guacamole and set aside. Place burger topped with green chilies, diced tomato, French fired onions, and shredded lettuce on bun. Spread guacamole mixture on bun and enjoy!
