6 “Off Season” Reasons to Visit SLO CAL This Winter

You’re coming off the holiday-high, the new year is here… now what? While well over half the country is experiencing bitter cold temperatures, us central coasters are sitting at a mild 65º. You know what that means? Time for a little vacation! Check out this list of off-season activities to fill your itinerary during winter travel to San Luis Obispo county.

Average Temp is 65°

Let’s start with the obvious, the previously stated fact is actually true. The average temperature in San Luis Obispo county—even in the depths of winter—is a mild 65º. That means as long as you’ve got a light jacket, anything is fair game! Hike Bishop’s Peak, visit a local farmers market, or make some smores on the beach in Oceano. Don’t let the label of “winter” stop you from enjoying the outdoors, at least not here. An outdoor lifestyle is welcomed year-round here on the Central Coast!

Polar Bear Plunge

Have you heard of this strange phenomenon? Participants in the polar bear plunge voluntarily throw themselves into the freezing cold water of the Pacific Ocean—all in the name of charity. There are a few Polar Bear Plunge events happening on the Central Coast at the turn of the year, one even includes a 5k! If you can muster up the will power, give it a try!  If you take part in this year’s “Pier to Plunge” in Pismo Beach, you might consider spending a night recovering at one of our area resorts: The Shore Cliff Hotel, or Pismo Lighthouse Suites. Joining the plunge in Avila Beach? Reserve a room at Avila Lighthouse Suites so you can run back to the comfort of a hot shower, just steps from action on the sand.

Monarch Butterfly Grove

One of the most breathtaking sites in the state, Monarch Grove in Pismo Beach is currently home to over 3,000 monarch butterflies, which is expected to grow to well over 10,000 by the end of the season. Visit Monarch Grove to learn more about these beautiful creatures and see them for yourself! Bring the kids along for the fun and make it a family outing. For more info visit monarchbutterfly.org, and while you’re in Pismo Beach come visit us at one of our area resorts: The Shore Cliff Hotel, or  Pismo Lighthouse Suites.

Restaurant Month

January is the most delicious time of the year on the Central Coast! Indulge in SLO CAL Restaurant Month. From January 1-31 participating restaurants will offer special prix-fixe menus of three courses at $30-$40 per person or other special offerings. Our very own Steakhouse at the Paso Robles Inn will be participating! Food is a love language to many, so grab your loved ones for a night (or two) of great food as we celebrate Restaurant Month here on the central coast.

Avila Valley Barn

Make your way to the quiet beach town of Avila for some family fun at the Avila Valley Barn! Buy the freshest fruit and vegetables grown locally, pick up a pie or bakery treat, or stop off for lunch from the deli. On top of that, you can let the kids visit the farm animals and even ride a tractor. There’s something for everyone at the Avila Valley Barn! For the ultimate family vacation, book your stay at Avila Lighthouse Suites, where each member of the family can enjoy swimming in the beachfront pool, practicing their swing on the putting green, or trying their hand at a game of life-size checkers, all just down the road from the fun at Avila Valley Barn.

Visit the Fremont

Located in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo, the Fremont Theater has been a home to Central Coast entertainment since 1941! If you’ve set foot on Monterey Street in Downtown SLO, you’ve surely seen the Fremont’s colorful neon lights—even more awe-inspiring than the exterior lights are the acts hosted inside this famed venue. In January, the Fremont is hosting “The Office” star Creed Bratton, southern rock singer/songwriter Paul Thorn, and more!
